あとしまつ【後始末】

1 〔事後の処置〕 a setting 《of matters》 right; settlement; clearance work; a winding-up; a cleaning up [a clearing away] 《of some problem, of some mess》.

～する settle; set 《matters》 right; take remedial measures 《in regard to sth》; wind up 《one's affairs》; sort [straighten] out; deal with the aftermath 《of…》.

●後始末がまだ付いていない. The matter hasn't been completely straightened out yet.

●けんかの後始末をする pick up the pieces after a quarrel; deal with the aftermath of a quarrel

・倒産した会社の後始末をする wind up the affairs of a company [firm] that has gone bankrupt [has declared bankruptcy, is insolvent, has declared insolvency]

・息子の借金の後始末をする pay off one's son's loan(s).

2 〔後片づけ〕 ⇒あとかたづけ.

●ゴミを散らかすようなことをされると後始末に困ります. I don't like to have to clean up after you [clean up the rubbish you leave everywhere].

●作業場の後始末をすませてから, 家に帰ります. I'll head for home when I've tidied up the work area.

・台所の後始末をしてから寝た. I went to bed after cleaning [tidying up] the kitchen.

・花火で遊んだら, 後始末を忘れないようにしなさい. Don't forget to dispose of everything properly when you're done playing with the fireworks.
